Set default downloads folder windows 10

Very restrictive. I have only one drive, so no choices for me here. Honestly, this is the one thing that needs to be fixed and always has needed to be fixed. My workplace has three shares on each PC; a z: drive, an x: drive and a w: drive as well as c: and a usb. The only options I get to default to in the above scenario are c: and the usb. Any idea on why this is? Thank you for sharing this procedure.

I have spent hours trying to figure it out. I have Windows 10 and when I click the drop-down menu, it only gives me OS as the default option. Can you please help me make another drive option, other than the OS default? I have no problems with MS setting up the defaults as they are for those that like everything done for them, however not giving me an effective option to manage my by own file system is arrogant, extemely annoying and unproductive.

It will hasten my move to Linux. Microsoft, your products are total garbage. Read the above comments. You waste my time. Bill Gates, your company is turning to crap.

Where are you? You actually might just kill laptops because of the total crap that you are pushing down our throats. No options, no capabilities. Maybe I want to save my stuff where I want it to be? Maybe you could give that option to choose. No wonder you guys love socialism. I have set everything to default to my second drive, and it saves even through reboots, etc. But content still ends up downloading into C: instead. Any tips for this? Also, I have run Disk Management checks, downloaded the manufacturers diagnostic application, etc.

Everything says its good. But nothing will save to it. I was under the impression that computers were supposed to save work and make us more efficient. Am I reading something incorrectly? How to change the default save location in Windows The main idea behind these default directories is to have a central place for certain files.

Sometimes, you may prefer that a different folder or drive is used, for instance when the main drive has not much space left or when you prefer to use a different folder for improved manageability of files. The options to change content directories are still found in the Settings application, but also in File Explorer directly. This guide helps users coming from Windows 10, but also new users of Windows 11, who would like to change the default content directories on the operating system.

The page that opens displays options to save the default save directory for the following content types:. The c: drive is selected by default.

You can change that to any other drive that is connected currently to the PC. Note though that files may become unavailable if you remove drives that are removable. As a rule of thumb, it is recommended to only select drives that are connected to the system permanently.

Select the apply button after you have switched a drive to set the new drive as the default save location for new files. Note : Windows will create a new username folder on the selected drive's root. The new default folder is a subfolder of that folder then. If you check the list of supported content types, you will notice that the Downloads folder is not listed. Windows 11, and previous versions of Windows as well, support a different system when it comes to the Downloads folder and other default folders such as Documents, Music, or Photos.

The option is not available in the Settings application. You may repeat the process for all content types, e. Documents or Videos. There is also a Restore Default button to restore the default location without having to type it manually. The main advantage of this method is that you can specify the new target drive and folder manually.

Moving default save locations and folders to another drive is a useful features, especially if the main drive is low on disk space. Or is there also a possibility tot store from Idrive, SugarSync, Dropbox and others? I think Apps refers only to Microsoft Store apps. As part of justification for 3 partition setup Microsoft has been notorious for having its own updates, or other softwares and their updates, mess up many times.

Also, some executables turn out to be viruses, bcs MS is so inept at making and keeping a secure OS, as they have even given up on MS essentials and really want people to go get other companies' antivirus. So having just the OS on the ssd, and then putting your added programs on a spinning hard drive partition and your data drive on another spinning hard drive partition, is the MAIN reason that people need this setup!

On win xp and win 7, i have always run 3 partitions, and using the junctions and rededit minor changes for drive letters. My config is C, E, G - C for win os of course, E for executables, and G for garage ie, personal data, stuffed like everyone's house garages with all my stuff, my keepsakes, etc. As an additional benefit, my disk drive i always make D like, duh! Thus, i have a c,d,e,f,g that covers all my computer needs If I get to the point of needing a pix only xhd, then of course P will come in handy.

In any case, when Windows messes up and have to do reinstall at some point I'll have to reinstall programs from E, but the point is that all the exe and setup files are there on my E, and preserved, so i just start dblclicking their file names to get them reinstalled.

I dont have to remember what programs I had, or what I might have lost ie some software like DVD shrink or mgi photosuite for win 7 no longer seem to exist and impossible to re-obtain. In any case, the drive letters should NOT matter to microsoft. Particularly since it has always worked on their systems, and there are innumerable posts and websites of how to do these steps in XP and 7 bcs some people just want to.

It just gets irritating that microsoft, who can't ever manage to put out any product without bugs, fixes, or new breakings of other things I tried this when installing my anti-virus software, with no success. What am I doing wrong. Details required : characters remaining Cancel Submit.

Do not think I was getting an error message. In the end I just admitted defeat. If I want to happen in a certain way, I will manually do it. Since I just got an advice about giving cudos to some of the contributors, and to possibly mark TonyAngHS or Andy Manishetti's solution as just that, here is my current thinking:. The result of my approach is that I can roll back the installation without affecting any of my files.

When I do, I notice only the least needs for attention. And I have not lost files - except when Win10 protection failed to catch an encryption Trojan. For that I went back to Norton immediately. And, for those interested, I need to roll back windows after each attempt to update it from the original installation footprint.

Something about my graphics card, I was told. And I suspect my Tyan server board is just a little too old, and seems to cause a machine exception each time I enable Windows to update itself. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community.
