If you buy a card reader - which I think you should - you don't need any software except Windows XP. Just copy and paste the files from the card-reader-folder to the folder where you want the photos. Downloading via card reader is definitely a good idea. I would suggest, however, that you avoid the no-name "gazillion-in-one" readers that show up on eBay and certain other sellers frequently.
Once you have the card reader, it will appear as a drive to Windows; put a CF card in the reader and it's like putting a disk in the drive, it automatically shows up in Explorer, etc. Just remember to eject the card properly i. If you bought the camera new, you should have received a Canon utilities CD in the package.

I forgot that you can't download EOS Viewer Utility from Canon unless it's already installed downloads are intended as updates. Contact your dealer about getting the utilities CD. Zoombrowser is a worthy download from the Canon website.
The softwares ability to create date-based folders instead of just the canon-named folders off the CF card is worth the download alone. I'm sure other software can do that as well Picasa?
